Advice From Emily Copeland Durham
No lanes. No limits. Add in the rush of a board or skis and you quickly become one with the water. You become part of a whole new club of people pushing the limits. But it's more than that; it’s about coming together, feeling youthful, and being part of the boating culture. More than anything, watersports are about having fun with your friends and family.
Professional wakeboard Emily Copeland Durham has been active in the sport for about 15 years. She explains when it comes to wakeboarding, “just have fun with it.” Durham was inspired to start wakeboarding by her brother Bart. “He coached me and helped me to learn quickly. With my gymnastics background, I was doing back flips within my first week. From there, I haven’t stopped riding since I first strapped on the board.”
Durham’s success in the sport has been substantial as a 4 time X-Games medalist including one gold medal. Fifteen years in, she has won pretty much every contest title out there. “Since I travel so much, there honestly isn't a better place to ride than on my lake in my own back yard."
Professional wakeboarder and Palm Beach, Florida native Shawn Watson has advice to enjoy the sport he loves: “Live life to the fullest. If you're not having a good time doing what you're doing, find a way to change it and have the best time of your life!”
Watson lives his life to the fullest by traveling and competing in wakeboard tournaments. “I've been to a lot of amazing places around the world to wakeboard, but one of the best would have to be Lake Powell in Arizona. I've taken many trips there. Every time I go, I'm still in amazement over how beautiful and surreal the place is,” Watson says.
