Celebrating Independence for the U.S.A and B.V.I.
July is for celebrating not only the independence of the United States of America, but also for the British Virgin Islands. Only a few days away from each other, the BVI celebrates their independence or “Virgin Islands Day” on July 1st. Much like the U.S., the BVI celebrate this holiday by coming together to honor and observe their history, culture and heritage.

Virgin Islands Day
The British Virgin Islands became a separate British overseas territory in just 1956, only 67 years ago. It is believed that Christopher Columbus was the first to see the islands in 1493 on his second voyage. He named the islands after the story of St.Ursula and the Virgins and has been under British control since 1672. -
A Musical Celebration
To commemorate Virgin Islands Day, many groups put on musical performances. The Ministry and the Department of Education and Culture invite the public to come out and enjoy the wonderful event. Another goal is to raise public awareness of conservation activities. -
Fun Facts!
Although the British Virgin Islands have over 60+ islands, only 16 of the islands are habited, so much of the islands have been left to nature. Additionally, the three-day Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival take place annually around the islands.
